Weymouth College are proud to be hosting this year’s southern heat, including Building Crafts College, City of Bath and Weymouth College. As host we will be able to have an A Team and B Team.
After a short briefing the competition starts at 8:15 am. They break for about 50 minutes at different intervals during the day. Tools down at 5 pm.
The competitors are given a drawing, a piece of stone and some materials for making the necessary moulds and templates. The stone will be Portland Stone and the piece will involve having to work mouldings. The use of air tools is not allowed.
The judges will then mark the stones but results wont be available until completion of the Northern heats (25th May). Once the two heats have been completed, the overall scores will be calculated and the winners will be announced. In previous contexts the judging panel has included Sean Collings (MD at Boden & Ward) and Andy MacClean (MD at Stewart Design)
As there are two heats for the UK Masonry Skills Challenge, the overall individual winner of each heat will receive a trophy to commemorate this.
There will be three individual winners, first, second and third, based on marks and three team winners based on the three candidates’ collective marks.
They will the following prizes:
1st Prize a cheque for £300
2nd Prize a cheque for £200
3rd Prize a cheque for £100
The winning college will be presented with the UK Masonry Skills Challenge Peter Ellis Shield and each team member will also receive a smaller trophy as a memento and a cheque for £50.
