Stone Federation GB - UK Masonry Skills Challenge - Weymouth College Stoenmasonry

Stone Federation GB – UK Masonry Skills Challenge – Weymouth College Stonemasonry

Organised by Stone Federation Great Britain, the UK Masonry Skills Challenge is open to teams of students and apprentices (in their first three years of training) from each stonemasonry college.  This competition is part of the qualifying procedure for SkillBuild (held at NEC, Birmingham) and then on to WorldSkills.

Competitors have to complete a specific project in an agreed time.  They are given a drawing, a piece of stone and materials necessary for making moulds and templets.  The stone must be work with a traditional mallet and chisel and no mechanical tools are allowed.

To qualify for the regional heats, Weymouth College Stonemasonry students must first take part in the College Selection Competition which takes place in the new year.  All students are allowed to take part in this process to make it as fair and inclusive as possible.

There are three individual winners, first, second and third, based on marks and a winning team based on the three candidates’ collective marks.  The winning college is presented with the UK Masony Skills Challenge Peter Ellis Shield and each team member receives a smaller trophy as a momento and a cheque.  The individual winners also receive a cash prize.

The 8 overall winners who meet the relevant criteria will earn a place in the SkillBuild Final being held later in the year (which is the biggest skills competition in the country!).

The current judges are Andy Maclean, owner of Stewart Design (UK) Ltd, and Sean Collins, MD of Boden & Ward Stonemasons.
